I did it!

I rode to work. I RODE my BIKE to WORK . For some reason, after I used 70% of my iPhone battery to track the ride, Fitnio decided not to record it. But it was right around 45 miles, and took just over three hours. Pretty slow, but I’m happy with it since I haven’t done a real ride (or even been on a bike, really) since the summer. For anyone interested, here’s the link to the route. It says 42.5 miles, but instead of the Foster City route we took a bike path that added about two miles. Aside from being freezing cold until the sun came up, and completely worn out at the end, it was extremely pleasant.

I plan on doing this once a week for a month or two, and then moving up to at least twice weekly.

I am completely exhausted, so that’s all I’m writing.

Crit training begins!

Last Summer I took part in CARVE’s Summer Crit Series, and I came out of it with a thoroughly cleaned clock. It took me three races just to not get lapped by everyone else. This Summer I’m determined to do at least a little bit better, so today I went out for a little crit-specific practice. I went down to Crissy Field, found an empty parking lot, and spent the better part of an hour working on track starts, figure eights and slaloming. I’ve hardly been on my bike at all this semester, since I can’t ride to class and my exercise time has gone toward running, but I’m definitely in better physical condition than I was this time last year. With some more time in the saddle I should be in pretty good shape, maybe even good enough to keep up with the old, fat, Cat 5 guys.

It’s a fantastically clear day, so after my parking lot drills I rode to the base of the bridge. There’s a new bike path most of the way there, so now instead of worrying about potholes and gravel you can focus on dodging tourists on rental bikes. Something about renting a bike absolutely makes people lose their minds. I honestly feel safer riding downtown during rush hour. Anyway, here are some pics, courtesy of my apparently colorblind iPhone.

I’m gonna start running again as soon as it stops raining. So like, probably in May or something.

Nobody Panic!

…I’m alive, despite what you might think from my lack of posts lately.

Laura (my beautiful, awesome girlfriend) was in town last week, which meant no training, which meant no updates on training. We did, however, walk so much that my feet hurt for two days after she left, so I’m going to pretend I trained a little bit. Touring the city on foot is not only a great way to take in the flavor of the neighborhoods, it’s a great way to wear yourself out.

Today was my first day back at the gym. I did a 5K run (3.1 miles) in 28:27. I held an 8:37 mile pace for the first two miles, a big first for me. Most of the last mile, after a little walking, was a 9:30 pace, about on par for me. My heart rate was 184 for about the first 18 minutes, and for the last six or so minutes… For a little while I thought my heart might explode, messily, and that would suck because they’d probably make me clean the blood off the treadmill. My next goals are to do three miles at 8:37 pace, and then to break 25 minutes for a 5K, then to add distance a half mile at a time. At the same time I’ll stick to my loosely interpreted version of Hal Higdon’s schedule, with a weekly long run and cross training day.

I’m seven pounds in to my 20-pound weight loss goal, so that’s going well. Laura bought me a stovetop espresso pot, so I’m drinking lots of very strong coffee. I mention this because supposedly coffee, being a stimulant, not only suppresses your appetite and lowers your blood sugar but also allows you to exercise harder, longer. I’d drink it anyway though, I looooove my coffee.

I loaded up some different music on my iPod for the run today. Modest Mouse’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is a surprisingly good running album. I’m to the point now where I don’t have to listen to Dragonforce to distract myself from how hard running is, which I count as progress. Dragonforce is still awesome though. I’m toying with the idea of reviewing albums based on how they help with a workout, so maybe look for that in the coming weeks.

Overall I’m pretty happy with how training is going. After a week off I was still able to accomplish a personal best, and each goal I set I accomplish fairly painlessly. Maybe I should be setting the bar a little higher, but I like feeling like it’s easy to be awesome.

Velo Rouge

Hey, remember when I said I was going to run 9 miles today? I lied. The opportunity arose to go for a bike ride with some friends, so I postponed the run until tomorrow. It’s probably a good thing, I feel like my knees needed the reprieve.

We went to a neat little cafe called the Velo Rouge for lunch. As you might imagine, it’s very bike-centric. Funky bike racks and a pump outside, SFBC stickers all over, and lots of old pictures of Tours de France. My favorite was of a rider lighting a cigarette for the rider next to him, that’s what I mean by “old pictures.” The coffee and the food were both outstanding, I might have to stop eating out altogether so I can make Sunday brunch there a regular thing. They have a t-shirt with a picture of a bike on it that says “53 miles per burrito.” I really need that shirt. I wear a large, by the way  ;)

Tomorrow I will be trying for 9 miles, for real.

Baby steps

Today I started with a bike ride to the Mission. Just a short one, but I did climb the hill next to Dolores Park. According to the SFBC bike map, it’s a 10-18% grade for about six blocks. It varies quite a bit, so it’s closer to 10% at the start and maybe 15% or so at the end. I’m just getting over a cold so my lung capacity is not 100%, but I did it!

Today was also my first workout at 24-Hour Fitness. I did the elliptical machine for 30 minutes (144 strides per minute, 157 heart rate, 442 calories) and finished up with a weight circuit. I’ll start running on the treadmill when I’m in better aerobic shape and this cold is totally gone—I’m shooting for the end of next week.

Oh, and those of you who are concerned that I don’t wear a helmet when I’m riding—I won’t mention any names here—those days are over. I got a brand-spankin’-new Bell Volt off eBay, and it arrived today. Only two words to describe this helmet: Friggin’ sweet. I want to go for a ride right now just so I’ll have an excuse to wear it. Or I guess I could just wear it around the apartment…

Training begins!

Today’s the day! Ok, not really, but Schuyler and I are at least gonna get out for a bike ride. The weather here in San Francisco is perfect (suck it, Chicago!) so we’d be crazy not to enjoy it. We’re planning to ride through Golden Gate Park, hopefully to the beach and back for about a 10-mile round trip. Not much, but the journey of a thousand miles and all that…

I got a membership at 24-Hour Fitness, so treadmill and weight training begins tomorrow (maybe even tonight—we’ll see).
